ATF Field meeting
North Lake District: Landscapes designed with trees.

13 October 2006

  Meeting arrangements:
Meet at 10 for 10.30 am. Please bring pack lunch. Meet in the Greystoke village car park, just on the east side of the village off the B5288 at NY 442 308. Greystoke Castle is about 7km to the west of Penrith

Event programme

Morning: Greystoke Castle has been the Cumbrian home to fourteen generations of the Howard family for over 500 years. The castle is surrounded by a ‘designed landscape’ containing some very old hornbeams and hazels. One question is whether the hazels were managed in a landscape that predates the time that the landscape was designed? The estate has just been entered into the Higher Level Scheme. The Howard family pride themselves on their responsible approach to land management which means preserving the value of this precious landscape in a balance with the need to generate the income to maintain it. The woodlands are managed to European standards to enhance still further the wildlife and bird habitats.

Afternoon: Meet in the Hutton-in-the-Forest car park. Hutton-in-the-Forest is about 7.5km to the north-west of Penrith. Linked to Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Hutton-in the Forest stood once on the edge of a mediaeval park but the deer have long since gone. The surrounding landscape is now part of a ‘designed landscape’ containing some policy woodlands in which there are some very tall oaks and limes that were probably established during the middle of the eighteenth century.

Please book online for this event. Bookings taken separately for this and the first day at Glenamara and Glencoyne to allow flexibility for people unable to attend both days.
